 Qur'an\, the Media\, and that Veil Thing\, author Sumbul Ali-Karamali\, a 
 Stanford - educated mom and corporate lawyer with degrees in Islamic law a
 nd English\, invites you inside for a candid\, witty\, and surprisingly do
 wn-to-earth conversation about Muslim life in America.   Warm\, funny\, an
 d yet scholarly\, The Muslim Next Door: the Qur'an\, the Media\, and that 
 Veil Thing reliably answers questions about Islam from an American Muslim 
 woman's point of view\, discussing subjects from the basic (is Allah diffe
 rent from God?) to the complex (does jihad not mean holy war?) to the bord
 erline ridiculous (&quot\;what do you mean you can't go to the prom becaus
 e of your religion?!&quot\;).\nSumbul Ali-Karamali grew up in Southern Cal
 ifornia in an ethnically South Asian family. She earned her undergraduate 
 degree in English\, with Distinction\, from Stanford University. After wor
 king as an editor in a publishing company\, she attended law school and gr
 aduated with her J.D. from the University of California at Davis. She prac
 ticed corporate law in San Francisco for several years.\nSumbul is current
 ly spending her time on speaking engagements\, radio and television interv
 iews\, writing\, raising her two children\, and volunteering her time to v
 arious causes. She serves on the board of trustees of a nonprofit educatio
 nal institution that teaches multicultural education and environmental edu
 cation to children and youth. She also serves on the steering committee of
  Women in Islamic Spirituality and Equality (WISE)\, an initiative dedicat
 ed to mobilizing a movement for social justice. For enjoyment\, Sumbul pla
 ys her violin\, teaches the occasional Indian cooking class\, and watches
